Coaching Events for 2025 Season

The following Coaching Courses are planned for 2025 and will run subject to numbers interested.

For any coaching enquiry, please approach Gordon Munns at the club or email: coaching@palmerparkbowlingclub.com

New Bowlers Course (6 weeks/sessions)

Aimed at completely New Bowlers. Coaching the basics of Delivery, Line and Length and the very basics of bowling etiquette and rules.

On completing the course you will have the confidence in your bowling ability and the knowledge of correcting things that inevitably go wrong. You will be at a level to fully participate in Club Night bowling as well as friendly matches, internal club competitions and the occasional league game.

Cost of the course is £30, which is included in your First Year Membership or fully refundable on joining if you choose to join at a later date.

This course has now been completed. Here is the course report:

We had 10 regular weekly attendees for our New Bowler’s Course in 2025. The 6-week course was very well received by all, with all 10 bowlers joining PPBC for the whole season once the the course finished. Once again, we were lucky enough to secure the additional coaching services of Judith Chree, a second Level 2 EBCS coach. Many thanks to our Club members who also assisted with the weekly sessions come rain or shine (although
thankfully this year it was nearly exclusively ‘shine’).

New Bowlers Refresher (2 weeks/sessions)

Aimed at bowlers who completed the New Bowlers Course but would like a short refresher.

Very brief coaching re-cap of Grip, Stance, How to get … Line, Weight and Consistency

Coaches will set up Purposeful Practice Drills and Games to re-embed previous content.

This course has now been completed. Here is the course report:

The New Bowlers refresher session was run on Tuesday 15th July. The course was attended by some of the bowlers who completed the 2024 course and had been bowling now for one year.  The course covered a re-cap on finding the correct Line and Length with a few additional tips and explanations.

As expected, the main difficulties people were having were consistency and precise weight control.  The session covered a few purposeful practice ideas for people to employ going forward to help them gain confidence and improvement in these areas.

Tips and Tricks of Marking (1 week/session)

Aimed at anyone who wishes to improve their marking skills or wants a refresher. Covers:

  • Filling out scorecards correctly
  • Equipment required to mark a game
  • What markers are (and aren’t) responsible for
  • Covers likely and unlikely scenarios that might arise when marking a game
  • Marking etiquette.

This course has now been completed. Here is the course report:

This course was run on Thursday 17th July and although numbers were down on previous years, those attending found it useful.  As well as some basic tips on marking, we also covered a few laws of the game to cover unusual events that have occurred during matches.  Also covered were tips on measuring, with various scenarios set up on the green for people to practice their measuring skills.

Reading The Head

Seven bowlers experienced at playing No.2 or Skip attended a new coaching course at PPBC – “Reading the Head”.  The course included discussions of several Heads that were pre-set on the green, as well as two new exercises of “Phantom Head” and “Freezing the Head”.  There was plenty of discussion interspersed with opportunities to bowl and the course was well received with positive feedback.  The course also covered tips on etiquette when playing in these advanced team positions.

This is the first year this session has been run.  The intention is to run the course as and when the Club will benefit – the purpose being to develop players who regularly participate in league and firendly games against other clubs.  It is aimed at those who already have experience and who play at No.2 or Skip.  As such, participation in the course is by invitation only and there will be no “sign-up” sheet in the clubhouse.
